Monster Mission: Scarecrow Watch

Tessaly the Masked, Kithicor Forest (beside Old Man Draykey) · Theme: Rujarkian Hills · You play: a hollow scarecrow

How to start a mission, how your form works and how rewards are picked are all in Monster Missions: How They Work. This page walks through Scarecrow Watch itself.

What Tessaly says

The Kithicor Tessaly has more than one shape to lend. Ask her for a [shape]:

Tonight I have more than one shape to lend: [scarecrow] [banshee] [werewolf] [bat] [masquerade]. Go alone; a shape will not hold two of you.

Say [scarecrow]:

The Mask-Taker's harvesters are coming for the souls of a farm's workers tonight. Something in the field has to wake up and guard them. Go alone. The shape will not hold two of you. Are you [ready]?

Your form

A hollow scarecrow, the tank of these missions. It fights at level 64 with 32,000 health, heavy armor and a hard-hitting melee swing. It has no mana. - Shared abilities: Innate Intelligence, Innate Wisdom, Eyes Wide Open, Mental Clarity, Throw Stone - Shape abilities: War Cry, Battle Stomp - Tank abilities: Hurled Axe, Battle Rage, Rally, Thick Hide, Cleave, Iron Hide, Intimidate, Grit

How it plays out

"The Long Night. You wake on a pole in a dark field, stuffed with straw, with a carved grin for a face. Four farmhands are still out working the harvest, and the Mask-Taker's harvesters and their crows are coming for them."

  1. Build the field. "Three posts stand at the edges of the field. [Hail] each one and choose what goes up there." There is a north, a middle and a south post. At each one, pick one of:
  2. [pumpkin wall]: holds back the first of every rush.
  3. [crow perch]: sends the crows at anything that comes close.
  4. [bonfire]: mends you while you stand by it.

You can mix them any way you like. When all three are up: "The field is ready. Out past the fence, lanterns bob in the dark and crows wheel overhead -- the harvesters and their crows are coming." 2. Guard the farmhands. "Guard the farmhands: strike the harvesters and the crows that go after them. Whatever falls tonight stays fallen." Four farmhands stand by the posts (one north, two in the middle, one south). Mask harvesters and crow swarms come out of the dark edges of the field in four waves, about a minute apart: - "Hooded harvesters climb the north fence." - "A black cloud of crows drops on the middle of the field!" - "Harvesters on every side of the field!" - "The last of the harvesters come in under the crows."

Kill what goes after each farmhand. A farmhand who dies ("The farmhand at the north post falls among the furrows.") does not come back. When the waves are done: "The field goes quiet. A farmhand points at the heaped harvest pyre: 'Light it, and they cannot take us.'" 3. Light the harvest pyre. "The harvest pyre waits in the middle of the field." Hail the pyre and stay close to it for 45 seconds: "You set your straw hand to the pyre. Stay beside it for 45 seconds." Two harvesters and two crow swarms push in from the far edge while you wait. Fight them next to the pyre. If you step away: "You step away and the flame dies to a smolder. Hail the pyre to begin again." When it catches: "The harvest pyre roars up into the night. The field is lit end to end." Then: "In the firelight, a tall figure with a grave-spade walks out of the dark. 'A scarecrow? He sent me for souls, not straw.'" 4. Fight Gravewright Tull. He waits at the south end of the field. "Stand aside, straw-man. Every mask in this field belongs to the Mask-Taker." Every farmhand still alive takes 5% off his starting health ("4 farmhands still stand with you, pitchforks up. Each one has already cut into him."). If none are left: "No farmhand is left standing. Gravewright Tull comes at you whole." - At 66% health: "Tull whistles, and harvesters come running out of the corn!" (a harvester and a crow swarm) - At 33% health: "Crows pour out of Tull's coat!" (a harvester and two crow swarms)

"Gravewright Tull falls into a furrow he dug himself." 5. The ending. "Dawn comes grey over the field. The pyre burns down to coals." If any farmhands lived: "4 farmhands walk home with their own faces. The Mask-Taker goes without tonight." If none did: "No one walks home from the field, but the Mask-Taker's harvest is burned with the pyre." Then Tull, gasping: "Hale Morrow will have his masks... the masquerade is already set..."

A win gives you your Monstrous Mayhem piece, as explained in the overview.

If the run fails: "The straw catches, the pole falls, and the shape you wore falls with it."
